Service Dog Training

Rather than apply to an agency, persons desiring a psychiatric service dog may train with an in home program. A Public Access Test provides training guidelines. This level of training is a two-year process. A service dog is trained to perform specific tasks and work as medical responses. Puppies and adult candidates must possess the temperament and personality to perform the work of a service dog. Identifying a breeder whose lines include service dogs is a good start.

The Public Access Test checklist is available at psychdogpartners.org. Please note that a service dog is a not a therapy dog or an emotional support animal (ESA). Therapy dogs and ESA’s are denied the level of public access that a service dog has.
